CANON: Fire Emblem: Fates (Revelations Route)
CANON HISTORY:
here
Niles is the retainer to Leo, the youngest Prince of the kingdom of Nohr, having been abandoned on the streets when young, and adopted by a group of thieves. With them, he lived as an outlaw for as long as he can remember, until they decided to break into the royal palace in a theft. When things went south, the other thieves left Niles behind as a distraction, knowing he would likely be killed for the crime, but he met the young prince and when he begged for death rather than his life, Leo instead hired him as his retainer.
He spent many years serving under Leo, and during the story, he remains as his faithful retainer. He doesn't start out the game with them though, and much of the beginning of the story is only relayed to him via Leo and his involvement with it. In Revelation route, Corrin-the main character- decides not to join either of the two armies, both of them being his family and both of them feeling wronged, and instead decides to make peace between the kingdoms on their own. At first, his lord feels wronged and decides to fight Corrin, thinking of them as a traitor, but when their own army attacks Corrin's on their father's orders, Leo and his elder brother Xander jump into the fray, taking Niles and their other retainers with them.
From this point on, Niles is a supporting character, a member of the army along with everyone else, but plays no major part in the plot of the game, simply serving as a playable unit in the army. He follows along as they discover Valla, the country hidden by magical means which a curse prevents anyone from talking about unless they know of it, the entity that has possessed not only Garon, the king of Nohr, but eventually everyone from Valla and even Gunter, who had been a father figure to Corrin, in an attempt to thwart them, and the truth of the world.
Niles has no further speaking parts aside from optional supports after joining the army in Revelations route, but more information on the Revelations route can be seen here under a spoiler cut.
CANON PERSONALITY:
Niles' personality in canon is rough around the edges at best. He has a reputation among those he knows as a 'scoundrel', often saying and doing things in an uncensored kind of manner, suggesting anything and everything that should not be brought up in polite society. He tends to start a conversation by trying to shock, disgust, or annoy any given person into either getting angry or leaving him alone, and if he does not get the reaction he wants, he tends to profess that he is 'bored', and will cut things off there without any kind of polite end to a conversation.
The truth is that Niles is not as terrible as he makes himself out to be, instead, he is simply worried that getting close to people will allow them in to hurt him, or otherwise it is setting himself up for failure. He sees himself as an outlaw, barely deserving of life, and as a burden for others save for Lord Leo, to which he has pledged his life and service. He was abandoned as a child and raised among thieves who cared nothing for him outside of his ability to be useful, and he had to do any number of terrible things in order to survive on the streets. It had been very hard on him, and in fact he had lost an eye at an early age to another outlaw, and it had made Niles very calloused and irreverent, much of which has carried over to his adult life. When he was abandoned during a break-in of the royal castle by the thieves who had been the closest thing to a family he'd ever known, he begged not for his life, but for a swift death, having no reason to continue fighting, and really just wanting it to end, but instead of being killed, the youngest prince of nohr hired him as a retainer, and his life so drastically improved immediately that Niles pledged his very being to the young lord, and while his outlook shifted, his personality has still resisted much of the change.
Despite this, Niles has morals, and can be sweet and caring. He tends to show it towards those that have suffered, whether it is as he had or in other ways, and while he is bitter when talking to others that he believes have lived a charmed life, he does not base his opinions on such surface-level observations as thier social or economic status, finding a true kindred spirit in Prince Leo despite him being royalty within moments of meeting him. That being said, he does value his reputation as a 'scoundrel', and tends to be a little roundabout in how he is sweet, for example when Mozu, a girl whose village was burned to the ground and slaughtered, professed to looking for a very valuable thing from her village because it was all that she had to hold on to, he acted like she was being selfish, but secretly pulled some strings in the underground to find her heirloom, giving it to her and telling her to keep it to herself that he'd done it.
Niles has little patience, however, for those who live priviledged lives and yet lament it. He also has little patience for pity for pity's sake, often cruelly cutting into people with harsh words, even when their actions are generally good, such as him calling Camilla 'pathetic' for latching on to Corrin and doting on them, saying that she was treating them like a puppy that she wanted to collect for her own selfish purposes. He can be convinced otherwise, and in that case he is, and when he is he is apologetic enough, but when he doesn't like someone or something that they do, he is merciless and blunt about it, leading many to dislike him. He mentions not minding that people dislike him because he believes that anyone who is worth his time will put up with it and be able to cut through all of his bullshit back.
Other than this, Niles is completely and totally loyal to Leo, serving as his retainer without question. Niles would do anything that Leo asked of him, and often deals with the criminal underground using his previous ties in order to do Leo's dirty work. This doesn't, however, mean that he is overly worried about how his behavior reflects on Leo. Unless he is told by his Lord directly to stop doing something, he is unlikely to abide by anyone else telling him to, unless he has built up a great deal of respect for them, as he has NO respect for authority otherwise. That being said, Leo doesn't police Niles' behavior strictly, allowing him to get away with behavior that is completely unbecoming of a retainer, including such things as disrespecting other royalty or officials, being a sexual deviant, or even outright committing crimes, all of which Niles does and is proud ot admit that he does.
Overall, Niles is a person who is hard to get along with! He's gruff and delights in making others uncomfortable, but underneath that is someone who does genuinely care about 'the little guy', being an advocate for the poor, the abandoned, the weak, and the tormented. He just has a hard time showing it, and doesn't like to be seen as overly friendly or caring.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Niles has no supernatural abilities, instead gifted with dexterity from a lifetime of thievery and archery. He has surprisingly good aim with ranged weapons such as bows or throwing knives, despite only having one eye, and he is good at sleight of hand and lockpicking.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Nicolai Leonetti
AU AGE: 25
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Nic is a much more muscular frame than Niles, not having grown up needing stealth or dexterity. He also has black hair rather than silver, and has a number of tattoos and piercings which simply would have never been possible in the medieval-type world of Fire Emblem. He also sports a little bit of facial hair.

He also has black hair rather than silver, and has a number of tattoos and piercings which simply would have never been possible in the medieval-type world of Fire Emblem. He also sports a little bit of facial hair.
AU HISTORY:
Nicolai was born to a single mother who had struggled with him when he was young. He was not easy to deal with, and at the age of five, it seemed like she had enough of it, and he was left at the orphanage in Recollé. It wasn't terrible, but Nic at that point already knew enough to know that the people who were coming in were not his mother. He didn't trust adults before she abandoned him there, and that only grew afterwards, Nicolai easily scaring off any potential adoptive parents deliberately by being as unpleasant and disrespectful as he could be. He grew up in the orphanage as a rather closed off kid, though he did manage to make a few friends there, they didn't manage to straighten him out, and as he grew, he grew more and more rebellious.
When he turned 16, Nicolai fell in with a bad crowd. A Very bad crowd, as luck would have it, and he ended up in a small street gang, and it was at that time that he left the orphanage. It wasn't necessarily the smart or right thing to do, but he was headstrong and by that time had built up a lot of anger at 'the establishment', and he took that and got a motorcycle, a leather jacket, a tire iron, and a bad attitude to go with it all.
He joined a biker gang to find a source of somewhat steady income, his attitude and age meaning that he had a very hard time finding any kind of legitimate job, and he relished in his newfound freedom. It wasn't an easy life though, and Nic often found himself sleeping under a bridge or in a train station, propped up against a cement wall with a thin blanket over him next to the only nice thing he had- his bike. He got into fights, stole, mugged, and every other kind of thing you could imagine and before long he was caught and sent to juvenile detention, where he stayed up until he had to be tranferred to prison, though he was out by the time that he was 21. He'd made a number of bad connections while in prison, and when he got out he simply picked up where he left off, getting back in touch with his old gang and picking up drinking and bar fights along with his other bad habits.
Still, he needed a semblance of normal, and he finally got an apartment to stay in. It wasn't anything great, but it was a steady roof over his head with a roommate that tolerated his bullshit. With his roommate's help, he does turn to legitimate jobs more often, but still ends up quitting most of them at the drop of the hat, out of boredom or annoyance. As of right now, he is just living his life day to day, not really caring about his future and feeling little about his past. He is just sailing down this highway in the wind.
EDIT, for revisions:
When Niles left the orphanage, he sought out freedom, leaving the city. The biker gang he joined out there wasn't anything highly organized, and was more like a brotherhood of thieves and petty crooks, but he knew the whole time that he was somewhat expendable. After he was sent to juvenile hall and subsequently prison, he decided to return to the city, having no strong feelings for the people who had helped him survive for those short years on his own. He didn't really leave the lifestyle behind, however, carrying with him a preference for doing illegal activities and his outside ties still more or less intact, though certainly not strong enough for him to consider himself still 'part' of it.
When he returned to the city, he did try to be more legitimate, knowing that he could not get away with the level of criminal activity he had in the past now that he was an adult without it threatening the freedom he had grown to enjoy. He still finds himself given to bar brawls, petty theft, and other smaller crimes which keep his pockets lined between under-the-table type jobs.
AU PERSONALITY:
Nicolai isn't too terribly different from Niles, at least on a surface level. He still tends to disrespect his environment and anyone who thinks of themselves as an authority, and he tends to push people away with harsh or indecent language. Nicolai doesnt have anyone that he feels truly loyal to though, and so has a wild streak without an end in sight.
Since he has no 'purpose' to his life, Nicolai is quite a but more of an adrenaline junkie. He does anything and everything to try to get himself to feel any kind of joy or attachment to life, which just so happens to mean that he is extremely impulsive. He doesn't really hold himself back from anything, be it sex, drugs, alcohol, fighting, or anything else that simply takes his fancy. For example, Nic has his whole right upper arm covered in tally mark tattoos, simply because he thought it'd be funny to get it one night and now he just adds to it any time anyone asks him what they're for, for no reason other than his own personal entertainment.
Nic is far less sadistic about his joy than Niles though. He enjoys a good fight and pushing people away from him with being uncouth is still how he does it, but it's less about making other people suffer and more about himself. He enjoys the adrenaline of a fight, not only because it makes him feel powerful to punch others, but also it satisfies a masochistic side to him which believes deep down that he truly deserves it. He has a deep-seated hatred for himself, believing himself unlovable, unwanted, unneccesary, which stems from being abandoned by his mother and while the logical part of him knows that it's not his fault that she did that, and that it's only his conscious efforts that made no other parents want him, there is that illogical part of his brain that won't stop telling him that he is simply fundamentally broken and useless.
Also unlike Niles, Nicolai has a bit of a chivalrous side. It's not always the most politically correct of course, but he does believe in defending women and children, and despite being in a gang and being completely willing to maim or kill others, he refuses to harm innocents and will often leap to the defense of others. Part of it is just because he loves a good fight, but another part of it just comes from wanting to be helpful to people who he considers to be better than himself.
Nicolai has a love of motorcycles and the lifestyle of freedom, feeling that having no one means he should embrace never being tied down, and he has thrown himself into bikes as a hobby as well as a lifestyle. He has a hard time sitting still and not doing something with his hands, and has surprisingly channeled that into learning to work on vehicles. Mostly his own motorcycle, but being a dropout doesn't make him unintelligent, and he finds himself gifted with mechanical know-how. There is little that can bring him a bigger feeling of satisfaction than tinkering, and it's one of the few marketable skills he does have, if only because he has an interest in it.
Overall, he thinks of himself as the trash of society, and he behaves in a manner that he believes befits that, but he has good in him as well. He just tends to hide that in an attempt to make himself fit into the niche that he made for himself, but from time to time, that good can slip through.
